Art Turmelle was at our meeting to answer questions and to give us his advice
on study abroad.
Deposit checks of $450 will be cashed on July 1.
- Computers are not required nor recommended. If you plan to bring a
computer, be sure to have an adapter.
- Salamanca is a 2 1/2 hour bus ride to the northwest of Madrid.
- There is an optional weekend trip to Madrid. The additional expense to
participate is $190, based on 15 participants, 3 days, 2 nights in Madrid.
- Classes are Monday-Thursday. No Friday classes.
- All students must enroll in Spanish Life & Culture class, 2 units.
- Students must take 12 units and maintain a 2.5 GPA while in the program.
- Photography 5 course requires a 35-millimeter camera and film developing
costs. Ron Herman from Foothill will teach the photography courses. Email
him with questions, 0h07991@mercury.fhda.edu.
- Homestays are all within walking distance of the campus. Laundry service
is provided once a week by the "seņora." Should you need to wash
clothes on your own, it is very expensive, $15-$20. If you require a
non-smoking family, be sure to put it on your application. Rooms are small,
very small, will share a bathroom.
- Our program has over 40 paid participants, so it is definitely happening.
- There is room for 6 more participants from LTCC. See Nancy if you have
friends whom are interested.
- Air travel will most likely be with British Air.
- Visas are not needed for this trip. If you plan to be in the country for
more than 90 days, you must have a visa, or leave the country. You can leave
the country and then return for another 90 days.
- If not a citizen of the U.S., be sure to have a green card from your
Consulate. Also, check with the Spanish Consulate for any documentation
needed.
- Register now
at both Foothill College and De Anza College. Just get
your name in the system so that you can easily register for classes in the
fall. You will need to print a signature page to mail to each campus. If you
need assistance, stop by the office and Nancy will help you.

- Participants will be sent an extensive questionnaire after the checks are
cashed in July. Give as much detail about your living needs as possible so
that AIFS can match you to a roommate.

Flexipass good for 10 trips within a two month period
Look for prices for students under 25 years of age.
There are many options for train passes. Check the Internet sites for all
options.

Bus travel is generally less expensive in Spain than train travel.
- Students must obtain their passports.

- Insurance, all participants receive insurance from AIFS. Information will
be sent in July. Most doctor and hospital bills will be reimbursed to
students. Be ready to pay for all medical expenses, have a credit card.
Clara Marsal, AIFS representative in Salamanca, will take students to the
doctor when needed. Doctors speak English. Clara will help with students who
may be homesick or experiencing culture shock. Ask for help!
- Money - use an ATM card. Know your international PIN. PIN must be 4
digits! Recommended spending money - $100 per week.
- Safety, don't bring any jewelry or personal belongings that you don't want
to lose. No safety deposit boxes available.
- Clothing - bring one nice outfit. Need comfortable walking shoes. You must
be able to carry your own luggage. Pack lightly. Be practical.
- Weather - similar to San Francisco in the autumn. Will vary. Wear layers.
Bring coat, sweater, umbrella.
- There will be 30,000 students in Salamanca. It is a college town, so you
will see students dressed in all styles. The Spanish generally dress more
stylishly than Americans do.
- Packing - 2 carry-on items, and 2 pieces of luggage to be checked. You
will be charged if your luggage is overweight. More info to come on
dimensions and weight for luggage. Bring a backpack for weekend trips and
your school materials, textbooks.
- Next meeting
at LTCC will be in June, before the end of the
quarter.
- Pre-departure orientation
will take place in late August or early
September with the entire group. It will most likely be held near Sacramento.
Time and date to be announced. Clara Marsal will be here to help us with
packing tips and travel advice. We will have textbook information for you at
this meeting.
- If you plan to be gone for the summer, notify Nancy.
- Have you changed phone numbers, address? Give the new info to Nancy.
- Once the fall quarter begins, we will be at LTCC and register for classes
together. You will work with Nancy on all courses that you plan to take.
Most assignments will be on the Internet. Once in Salamanca, you will attend
classes with each instructor.

- Register for classes at Foothill and DeAnza.
