Office Technology
Self-Paced Center

Introduction

WELCOME to the Office Technology open-entry, self-paced center learning experience.  There are several advantages to taking classes that are offered in the Center, such as:

Flexibility.  CAO open-entry classes give students the ability to work on the course, have assignments graded, and take tests in the Center which is open at least 14 hours a week; students may attend day or evening hours.  Most lecture classes meet during specific times, which is inconvenient for many working students.  The Center offers carefully prepared modules of instruction that allow for flexible scheduling.  Your hours may vary from day to day and may be scheduled for more than two hours per day.  Therefore, each module can be completed as rapidly as your capabilities and/or commitments allow.  Remember that you are required to attend four hours per week in the Center but your TBA lab hours can be fulfilled any time our computer labs are open.

Personalized Instruction.  The Center is the student’s classroom; the student has personalized instruction available anytime the Center is open.  This appeals to many students who feel lost in a typical classroom or who may need extra help.  Students find that this level of access to instruction increases their chance of success.  All students enrolled in a module are required to spend a minimum of four hours per week in the Center plus one to two hours of lab time (depending on what class the student is enrolled in).  Lab time may be completed during open lab hours.

Late Enrollment.  CAO open-entry classes allow students to enroll past the typical registration deadlines for full-quarter classes.  This gives students more options when other classes are full, or an unexpected change has meant they need to pick up a course where they had not planned.

 CENTER ORIENTATION

Each student is required to attend an orientation in the Center before beginning course work.  There is an orientation schedule on page 29 of the LTCC Fall schedule.  At your orientation you will check in with your instructor, become familiarized to the lab, and receive course materials.

Self-Paced course/center Procedures

You will use your student ID or student ID card to log in and log out on each visit to the Center to record your attendance.  You will also log in during open lab time.  Attending four hours in the Center per week is required plus you will be required to attend one to two hours per week TBA lab time. Please refer to Appendix A if you are completing lab assignments off campus.  Attending five to six hours a week is required to master the new skills you are learning such as keyboarding, electronic calculator, or transcription.  If you are absent for more than two weeks without contacting your instructor, you may be dropped from your module(s).  Also, if you are not making satisfactory progress at week six—you may be dropped from your module(s).

You will need to read the Syllabus/Assignment Guide, the textbook, and the computer screens in order to follow directions for each module.

When you successfully complete the module assignments and test(s) you will qualify for the unit of credit for the module.  The unit will be granted only when the module requirements are successfully completed.  When you complete your module, see an instructor about enrolling in another module.
