CAO 185 - OFFICE PROCEDURESSpring Quarter 2006Tuesday and
Thursday: 4:00 p.m. – 5:50 p.m., Instructor: Ms. Treva Thomas Course Description: A survey and study of the role, responsibilities and skills used by the office employees. Students integrate the skills and knowledge gained in other office administration classes with topics that have not been covered. Topics include office communications, correspondence, administrative support, office organization, and career planning. Advisory: CAO 173AB and CAO184, or proof of competencies. Course Content: The content of the course will include, but is not limited to: the role of the office professional, skills needed, how to apply for an office position, and succeeding on the job; office communications, working with other employees, developing good public relations, managing documents; correspondence duties, incoming and outgoing mail, processing mail in the mailroom; administrative support duties, using reference sources, assisting in meetings, financial records, making travel arrangements; office technology, understanding computer hardware and software and other office equipment; time management, prioritizing tasks, and managing stress; and review language skills and proofreading skills. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to: ·
evaluate the task, determine appropriate procedures to follow, · evaluate the task, assign priority, and demonstrate how the tasks would be completed in the workplace when given a list of tasks to perform; · propose appropriate solutions to solve an office human relations problem; and · prepare job application documents Textbook: Technology & Procedures for Administrative Professionals by Patsy Fulton-Calkins, 12th ed., South-Western Publ. Business Reading: Read five (5) articles during the quarter, one every other week: Use the form available from the instructor to summarize your reading. The form is also on disk. Summaries must be typed. An article in another magazine (business, news, popular) or newspaper may be used if it relates to the content of this course. Try to read articles that give you new and current information. Make a copy of the article and attach to your report. Attendance: Regular attendance is expected.
