CAO Center Hours:
You will learn to use the 10-key adding machine by touch while reviewing basic math with business applications.
Textbook: SOLVING BUSINESS PROBLEMS ON THE ELECTRONIC CALCULATOR, 6th ed., by Polisky; Glencoe Publishing Co., 2003. Course Content: (Each module = 1 unit of credit.) Module A - Technique and operation of ten-key electronic calculator and computer 10-key pad. Develop speed and accuracy doing touch addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding, and estimating without a calculator. Using constants and negatives. Module B - Using ten-key electronic calculator to do common business problems with emphasis on speed and accuracy. Continue speed building on touch addition. Use memory, fractions, decimals, percents, discounts, work with invoices, markup, markdown, and payroll. Module C - Do more business problems. Continue speed and accuracy building on touch addition. Use stocks, bonds, investments, and interest rates. Advisory: Math 187B or equivalent course.
Student Outcomes: Methods of Evaluation:
1.
Teacher observation of skill and timed drills. 2. Quality and quantity of projects completed. 3. Tests.
4. Course Grade:
Overall Grading Scale: Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. A skill is built and developed through daily practice. The class assignments will require you to attend five hours per week. For better than average achievement, you will need to spend extra time in the lab practicing your skill. If you cannot attend class, please notify me by leaving a message in my voice mailbox. If you are absent for two weeks with no message, you may be dropped from the class. Assignments: See assignment schedule below. Lab Hours: In addition to the four hours spent in the Center, you may wish to use the lab and machines for additional practice in the D120 lab. A schedule of available lab hours is posted in Room D120. Please log in all lab hours you spend in Room D120 on the computer "timekeeper." The lab instructor in Room D120 can help you. Math Help: If you need help in math, see the math tutor in the Math Department. Accommodations: Any students needing accommodations should inform the instructor. Students with disabilities who may need accommodations for this class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) early in the quarter so that reasonable accommodations may be implemented as soon as possible. Students may contact the DRC by visiting the Center (located in room A205) or by phoning 541-4660, ext. 249 (voice) or 542-1870 (TTY for deaf students). All information will remain confidential. Weekly Timings: Please see your instructor in week two for an orientation on “How to Take Keystroke Timings” (pg. 10 of syllabus). You will need to record your best KSPM per week on the chart below.
TIME SCHEDULE FOR ASSIGNMENTS -- SPRING QUARTER 2006 This schedule is a suggested guide for the student who wishes to finish all three modules by the end of the quarter and earn three quarter units of credit. Students may proceed faster or slower than this schedule. These assignments may be modified or changed as the class progresses. There are three major areas of instruction: (1) touch addition with speed and accuracy, (2) touch method for other machine functions, (3) using the electronic calculator for business use and home use. * Your textbook has “Business Calculator Application” after lesson 7, 12, 20, 25, 29, and 34. We will OMIT these applications.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed CAO178ABC1. Place a formatted disk in drive A of the computer. 2.
Double click the CAO folder on the desktop. Double click on the Keyboarding 3. Click on the Keyboarding Pro Multimedia title screen. 4.
IF YOU ARE USING YOUR DISK WITH KEYBOARDING PRO MULTIMEDIA a. Complete steps 1 and 2 above. b. Click on New User button. In “New Student” dialogue box click in box next to Name, type your first and last names (use capitals for the first letter of each name). Press the Tab key. c. In the Class ID box, type in your class code: CAO 178. Press the Tab key. d. In the Password box type in xxx (three - x no quotation marks). e.
f. Click on the Numeric Keypad (Lessons 1-4). 5. ALL OTHER TIMES AFTER THE FIRST: a. Complete steps 1, 2, and 3 above. b. Click on OK in the Log In dialogue box. c. Enter xxx in the password box: d. Click on OK in the Password dialogue box. e. Click on OK button in the Log In dialogue box. f. Click on the Numeric Keypad (Lessons 1-4). HOW TO EXIT FROM KEYBOARDING PRO MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE 1. Click on the E with the
circle around it (exit) or click the X in the
upper-right corner 2. Records are saved on your data disk. Remove disk from A drive.
Starting in week two, you will be taking weekly timed drills to determine your keystrokes per minute (KSPM). You will be taking three 3’ timings and then choosing the best score to be recorded. Please talk to your instructor to get a drill sheet and timing device. TIMINGS MUST BE TAKEN DURING CENTER HOURS. Steps for completing keystroke timings: 1. Get drill sheet, KSPM Form, and timing device from your instructor. Set your decimal selector at two. 2. Take three 3’ timings. 3. Proof your tapes against the drill sheets and circle any errors. Each incorrect digit counts as one error, for example: * 28 instead of 82 is two errors * 102 instead of 103 is one error * entering a wrong number and then immediately correcting it by subtracting the number is considered one error. (Example: 18.59+ followed by 18.59- followed by 18.58+) * duplicate entry is one error. 4. Calculate gross keystrokes per minute:
* Decimal point is not counted as a keystroke. Each time the add bar is used counts as one keystroke: 4.06 is four keystrokes (the numbers 406 plus use of add bar) 406 is four keystrokes for the same reason * Each time the total bar is used counts as one keystroke. An example of gross keystrokes per minute:
![]()
5. Calculate KSPM a. take the total gross keystrokes, then b. subtract errors circled (this total is the net keystrokes), then c. divide net keystrokes by 3 (minutes)
