Pedagogical Goals and Student Resources in Anthropology

As an instructor of anthropology, one of my major concerns is the issue of student success. Goal: Student Success in Anthropology. For many new students to the discipline, the varied perspectives of anthropology are challenging, and it is my hope that by utilizing an extensive Internet site dedicated to the discipline, my students will be better able to succeed in anthropology. I developed a student success and writing guide to assist students in both anthropology and sociology, and already I have seen improved work in the classroom. Goal: Connecting the 4 Fields. I currently teach courses in three of the four fields, and have developed curriculum for Linguistic Anthropology and a Certificate in Applied Anthropology. I am an advocate of the four fields pedagogically, and I believe that students should have available resources that allow for interconnections between their various anthropology classes. To facilitate such connection I utilize a webpage that I have developed. It focuses on the four fields of anthropology and it integrates information about the professional goals of the American Anthropological Association. Goal: Stressing the Possibilities of Transfer and Careers in Anthropology. In my classes I speak passionately about the values of majoring in anthropology, and to this end I stress resources for community college students who wish to pursue an anthropology degree upon transfer. One webpage offers links to all anthropology departments and curriculum pages in the California State University and University of California systems. A second webpage discusses the benefits of careers in anthropology, including academic and applied aspects. Goal: Providing Anthropology Students with Additional Curricular Resources. In addition to the many films, activities, readings and handouts that I utilize in my anthropology courses, I provide students with additional resources that might be helpful in their pursuit of academic studies of the discipline. One such resource is a webpage on anthropological theories, another an extensive four-fields anthropology links page. By using the Internet as a focus of my anthropology classes, I believe that I have more effectively enabled my students to understand the discipline.
