The Class Listserv: A listserv is an electronic discussion board, often used for educational purposes. Some definitions of a listserv are available here. In our Introduction to Sociology class, we will be using the listserv to communicate with one another about course topics. The listserv is a major component of your grade, so be sure to post regularly to our listserv. Please see this page for a description of how posts are graded. Remember that all listserv posts are due on Thursdays.

Personal E-mail Account: You must have an e-mail account to enroll in this class. If you do not have one, go to any number of free sites, such as yahoo or hotmail, to set up an account. After you have your e-mail account, you will be able to take advantage of the listserv. Here is our course listserv information:

To get started with the listserv for SOC 101:

Send a message to the subscribe e-mail.

Check your e-mail to receive the response from the listserv.

When you receive the e-mail with the subject "Please confirm your request to join soc101s," open that e-mail message and either (a) click on the link listed in the e-mail or (b) simply reply to the email message by hitting reply and send.

You will then be subscribed to the listserv. You can then send a message to the listserv using the group email listed above (NOTE: be sure that you wish to send the message; if you send one to this e-mail address everyone in the class will receive it. If you wish to talk to me privately, use my personal e-mail account). This page helps illustrate the Yahoo listserv architecture.

You can read an archive of all discussions using the group home page. That's it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listserv Problems: No technology is fool-proof, and, rarely, the listserv can go down. You will not be penalized for this. However, this has to be a major, system-wide outage of the listserv that affects everyone, not just your own computer. In some cases, you may have trouble signing up for the listserv. Do try and sign-up during the first week and talk to me, immediately, if you have any technical problems. Please note: listserv problems will not be allowed as an excuse in this class. If you miss posts because of your computer, you will not be able to make them up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delivery Options: The Yahoo listserv offers different delivery options, including weekly digest, daily, special alerts, etc. I recommend that you set your listserv option to receive ALL emails from the class. Some students have complained that this floods their mail boxes, but this is why we are here. All I can say is expect to receive many email messages during this online class. It's the nature of online education. If you like, you can set up a separate email just for this class so that your everyday email is not flooded with emails from the class.
