San Andreas System

 

Origin:  Mendocino triple junction,  Cascadia subduction zone, seismicity, fold-thrust belt

Geometry: fault strands, offset streams, restraining bend (compression, ridges, reverse faults or thrust faults, folding),  releasing bend (extension, sag ponds, pull apart basins)

History:  northern San Andreas, Mendocino to Hollister, 4 major strands:  Rodgers Creek, Hayward, Calaveras, various reverse faults, 1989 Loma Prieta M7.1 - strike slip and reverse motion, 1906 San Francisco M 8.2?, sediment related damage

central San Andreas, fault creep releases strain, Parkfield - 22 year recurrence of M6

Carrizo Plain, 1857 Fort Tejon M8.2?

Big Bend - Transverse ranges, restraining bend, reverse faults and thrust faults, Northridge
