Foreign Language Institute Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I study?
You may study at one or more of the following locations:

Spain: Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Salamanca, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia;
Mexico: Guanajuato, Cuernavaca

When can I go, and how long are the sessions?
Sessions are on-going throughout the year. Students choose the time period that is best for them.  Courses are 3 weeks in length with the exception of Mexico. There you also have the option of 2 week courses.  Holidays, when they occur, at different times at the different locations are opportunities for students to participate in cultural activities on these days as opposed to classroom language learning.  Some weeks do not contain complete beginner classes (LTCC’s International Education Department will notify complete beginners if your dates of preference do not coincide with the complete beginner schedule).

How much college credit will I receive from LTCC?
Students may take one or more foreign language courses in Spain or Mexico through LTCC.  Each course can be completed in 3 weeks (there are 2-week courses available in Cuernavaca, Mexico).  Upon successful completion of the course, a student receives 6 quarter units of transferable college credit (5 for the 2-week course in Cuernavaca). 5 of the 6 quarter units are transferable and translate to 3 and 1/3 semester units.  Students can take several courses in a row. For example, a student may choose to complete Spanish 101, 102, and 103 in a nine-week stay in Spain and, if successful, the student will receive 15 quarter units from LTCC (equals 10 semester credits).

Will I just be studying, or will I have the opportunity to see the country and experience the culture of where I travel to?
Students study 20 hours of intensive foreign language per week.  They are encouraged to speak as much of the language they are studying outside of those hours as possible.  The Foreign Language Institutes also offer other cultural activities to help orient students and expose them to the culture they are visiting.  Students also have free time to explore.  They may choose to do this in one location, or they may spend each session of their studies in a different location of their choice.

Where will I stay?  How are meals arranged?
All of our Foreign Language Institute Partners have a large array of board and lodging choices. Students may choose to room with a family, stay in a flat, have breakfast, half-board or full-board.  All of these options may be mixed and matched if the choice is made to study in more than one location.

How much will my educational adventure cost?
Each trip will be different, depending on the combinations chosen and length of the trip.  The registration and enrollment fees usually charged by the Foreign Language Institutes are waived for students who study through  LTCC.  California residents pay only $102 per course.  Out-of-state tuition will be charged accordingly for non-residents of California.  There is also a good neighbor policy that provides special tuition rates for Nevada residents.

How do I register?
Students register through the International Education Office at LTCC either in person, phone or e-mail.  In all methods, students are helped through the LTCC and Foreign Language Institute registration process.  Students who prefer to register on campus are encouraged to make an appointment with the International Education Programs Coordinator.
