Financial Aid for Study Abroad Students

Many students who are considering enrolling in a Study Abroad Program become interested in applying for financial aid since their expenses for the academic year significantly increase over their usual expenses.  Here are a few things that can help you understand the relationship between Study Abroad and Financial Aid.

  • The First step for any student interested in financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Applications for 2003-2004 are available now in the LTCC's Student Services Office, and should be completed as soon as possible.  You may also apply on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov

  • You must list the following code number in Step 6 of your FAFSA: LTCC 012907

  • We have regular state and federal financial aid programs to offer (Pell Grant, FSEOG, Stafford Loans, Parent Loans, Cal Grant, EOPS and Board of Governor's fee waivers.)

  • Study Abroad students must meet all eligibility criteria in order to receive financial aid and must sign a consortium contract.

  • Financial aid programs offer loans and grants.  Grant aid is available to the lower income students/families while loans are available for low, middle and upper income students/families.

  • Students in Study Abroad have extra expenses such as transportation costs.  This is taken into consideration when awarding financial aid to Study Abroad students.

  • Students receiving financial aid for Study Abroad can generally be paid early in the quarter before leaving on their trip, if their financial aid file is complete.  No aid can be disbursed before classes begin; therefore, students will be responsible for paying all deposits, etc.  Aid is distributed on a quarterly basis for all quarters during the school year, not just the Study Abroad quarter.
