In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions & Records.

For Math 187A, the deadlines are:

Friday, January 5, 2007 is the last day for refunds.

Friday, January 12, 2007 is the last day to drop with no record.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1.  Come to every class meeting.

2.  Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts.  Sit where you won’t be                    distracted and take notes.

3.  Read each section before it is discussed in class.

4.  Do all the homework

5.  Do some math every day.

6.  Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance.

7.  Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept.

8.  Take advantage of tutors and office hours.

9.      Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

Calculators are not allowed for this class.

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Course materials available in alternate format.

Methods of Evaluation:

Homework is due every Tuesday.  The assignment must be completed and turned in at the beginning of class. Please be neat, write the problem and show your work for each homework problem.  Each section that is incomplete receives partial credit.  Homework that is turned in late is penalized 2 points for each day late.  Homework turned in after one week of the due date receives no credit.

Homework is 10% of the class grade.

Two Quizzes are given in each course.  They are given at the beginning of class before the lecture.  Please be on time. All students are to take the quiz on the same day.  If you miss a quiz, there is a penalty of one letter grade.  No quiz can be made up after 3 school days.

Each quiz counts for 25% of the class grade for the course.

The Final Exam is given on the last day of class.  All students must take the exam for Math 187A by February 8th.  If a student does not receive a passing grade in Math 187A, that student will not be allowed to continue on to Math 187B.  The final exam counts for 40% of the class grade for the course.

Grades are based on the following scale.

                        A                                 90% - 100%

                        B                                 80% - 89%

                        C                                 70% - 79%

                        D                                 60% - 69%

                        F                                  Below 60%

Student Outcomes

At the end of this class, a successful student will be able to:
1) Exhibit a proficiency in the topics covered in the course.
2) Engage in logical and critical thinking.
3) Read technical information.
4) Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into Mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements, and checking and verifying results.

Academic Integrity:

Homework may be done in groups with other students or with the help of the instructor or tutors, but each student must turn in their own work.

Quizzes and Exams must be done by the student alone.

Any Student who violates this rule will receive a zero on the Quiz or Exam.

A second offense will result in withdrawal or failing the course.
Homework problems that say Odd, means do all the Odd problems.

EOO means do Every Other Odd problem.
