EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY Syllabus Math 153 (4 units) Spring 2007 Instructor: Torril Purvis Home Phone: (530) 573 - 0423 Monday and Wednesday 4:00 – 5:50 PM Email: purvistorril@hotmail.com REQUIRED TEXT: Geometry, Prentice Hall Mathematics COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a formal course in Geometry covering the basics of lines, planes, angles, triangles and congruence, the Pythagorean Theorem, similarity, and special right triangles. The methods of deductive reasoning will be studied in depth. STUDENT OUTCOMES: PREREQUISITE: C or better in Mat152A and Mat152B, or satisfactory score on assessment test. Mat152B may be taken concurrently. GRADING POLICY: Exam 1 (Chapters 1-3) 100 points Exam 2 (Chapters 4-6) 100 points Homework 75 points (First 5 asn = 15 pts, last asn. = 10 bonus) Quizzes 75 points Final (Cumulative) 150 points Total = 500 points
Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of the total points. The total points possible is 500 points. A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F less than 60%
MAKE-UP POLICY: There are no make-ups for quizzes however one quiz score will be dropped, taking the best 3 out of 4 quizzes. Make-up for Exams and the Final will be assessed a 10% penalty if the absence is not excused. Students must contact the instructor in advance of the examination in order to arrange a make-up.

HOMEWORK: Homework is due before the quizzes and exams. Late homework will be penalized 50%. All homework is worth three points (there are 8 points of extra credit available). TUTORING: Free tutoring is available in the Gateway Math Center, G-4. Schedules for tutoring will be handed out in class when made available to me.
