e-Text: Collaborative Statistics  by Illowksy and Dean

Course Description This course will cover data analysis including probability, distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, regression analysis, and nonparametric analysis.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Design and implement an unbiased study that will produce sound statistical results.
  2. Generate and interpret statistics graphs from data that arise from surveys and experiments.
  3. Implement the rules of probability.
  4. Apply confidence intervals and test hypotheses to make conclusions about data that come from practical applications.
  5. Perform regression analysis to make informed predictions about relationships between quantitative variables.

Prerequisite A grade of C or better in Math 154A or an equivalent class within the past two years, or a satisfactory score on the assessment test.

Grading Policy Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of possible points.

A 90 -- 100%         C 70 -- 79%

B 80 -- 89%            D 60 -- 69%

Homework: ...............................................100 points

Quizzes:  ....................................................100 points

Online Exam 1: October 11 .......................100 points

In Class Exam II: October 29   .................200 points

Project 1:  October 6   .............................. 100 points

Project 2:  November 8 .............................. 100 points

In Class Final Exam: November 19   .........   300 points

Exam Policy Students are to bring calculators, pencils or pens, and paper to each in class exam. Grading will based on the progress towards the final answer, and the demonstration of understanding of the concept that is being tested, therefore, work must be shown in detail. Any student who cannot make it to an exam may elect to take the exam up to two days before the exam is scheduled.  Without a proven medical excuse, a 10% per day penalty will be given for each day the exam is taken late.  The first exam will be an online exam to be submitted by midnight on Sunday October 11.  The second exam will be an in class exam to be taken on October 29 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in A211 at LTCC.  The final exam is a comprehensive in class exam that will be taken on November 19 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in A211 at LTCC.  Any student who cannot make it to Lake Tahoe for the exam may elect to take the exam at Sacramento City College with Virginia May or at De Anza College with Barbara Illowsky.

Homework and Quiz Policy  Homework and quizzes will be worked out online.   Homework may be turned in using any format:  snailmail, e-mail with attachment, in person, in your instructor's box, etc.  Homework must be turned in or postmarked by Saturday of the week that it is due.  Quizzes are due on Midnight on Sunday at midnight (the day after the homework is due).  Homework and quizzes that are submitted within one week of the due date will be counted as half credit. Homework and quizzes may be submitted later than one week after the due date, but points will not be awarded.

Live Webinars  On Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 Larry will present live webinars and on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 Virginia May will present live webinars.  Students must attend at least one of these per week.  The webinars will be archived for viewing in case you cannot make the live webinar.  In order to get credit for attending or viewing the webinar, you must email Larry by Saturday of that week with the secret word that will be given out during the webinar.

Projects Two projects are to be submitted for the course.  More details to follow.

CALCULATORS: A calculator with built-in one and two variable statistics functions is required for this class.  The TI-30X IIS is one such calculator that is inexpensive.

LEARNING DISABILITIES: If you have a learning disability, be sure to discuss your special needs with Larry.  Learning disabilities will be accommodated and you may contact our disability resource center by email or by phone at (530) 541-4660 x 384.

TUTORING:  Tutors are available at no cost in A 201 (The Math Success Center).

A WORD ON HONESTY:

Cheating or copying will not be tolerated. People who cheat dilute the honest effort of the rest of us.  If you cheat on a quiz or exam you will receive an F  for the course, not merely for the test.  Other college disciplinary action including expulsion might occur. Please don’t cheat in this class.  If you are having difficulty with the course, please see me.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN AN ONLINE MATH CLASS

  •  Come to every virtual class meeting.
  •  Get online early, get yourself settled, spend a few minutes looking at your notes from the previous class meeting, and have your materials ready when class starts.
  •  Read each section before it is discussed in the webinars.
  •  Do some math every day.
  •  Start preparing for the exams at least a week in advance.
  • Submit your homework and quizzes at least 24 hours before it it due.  Computer problems always seem to occur at the worst times.
  • Stay after lecture for the online office hour.
  • Get help from a tutor or from your instructor whenever you are confused.  Your instructor is there to help you pass.  With hard work, many hours on task, and persistence, you can achieve your goals.
