BASIC MATHEMATICS (PART I) Math 191AL Fall, 2008Tuesday/Thursday 3:30 –5:50Room: A206 2.5 units
INSTRUCTOR: Colleen McDonough
EMAIL: mcdonough@ltcc.edu REQUIRED TEXT: Basic College Mathematics 5th Edition by Tobey & SlaterCourse Description: The purpose of this course is to teach students the skill of basic arithmetic. We will cover whole numbers, fractions, and an introduction to decimals. In reality, you have probably already seen this material somewhere in your educational past but may have forgotten it or never really understood it when it was first presented. In this class, our goal is to fill in the gaps of your knowledge about arithmetic and to help you get the “big picture” so that it will all fit together in a way which makes sense to you and that you are able to apply it to “real life” problems. This course is an extended version of Math 187A in which we will include a component of study skills to assist you in being successful in this math class and others which you will take in the future. Grading: Your class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale: A: 90% and above, B: 80-89%, C: 70-79%, D: 60-69%, F: less than 60% Homework 25 points Study Skill Component 25 points Exam #1 60 points Exam #2 60 points Comprehensive Final Exam: 100 points Total 270 points
LEARNING DISABILITIES: If you have a learning disability, be sure to discuss your special needs with me. Learning disabilities will be accommodated. TUTORING: Tutoring is available in the Math Success Center (MSC) in Room 201. Tutoring schedules will be distributed to you in class. STUDENT OUTCOMES The successful student in Mat 191AL will be able to: 1. Perform arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. 2. Translate written language into mathematical statements. 3. Apply the concepts in the course to real-life situations. 4. Apply study skills learned in this class to studying in this class.
HOW TO SUCCEED IN A MATH CLASS:
1) Come to every class meeting prepared and ready to participate.
2) Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts. Sit where you won’t be distracted.

The following activities are NOT cheating: (1) collaborating with other students to complete homework assignments (2) working with math tutors or academic coaches to complete homework assignments (3) working with other students to study for exams, quizzes or the final. Disciplinary actions for cheating in this class: (1) First offense will result in a grade of zero on the item on which the cheating occurred (2) Second offense will result in the student being given an “F” for their grade in the class. The worst thing about cheating, however, is compromising your character for such a small reward. The Comprehensive Final Exam is on Monday, December 5 at 4:00 PM. Tentative Lecture Schedule for Math 191AL
Be sure to use class time, office hours, and the MSC to get all of your questions answered. These assignments will be graded on clarity, completeness and correctness. These problems are considered late if they are not turned in by 6:00 p.m. the day they are due. If you will be absent, either turn in the homework early or have someone turn in the homework assignment for you.
