Course Description: The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems. This class is a six-week course covering:

More Decimals (Sections 3.5 – 3.7)

Ratios and Rates (Sections 4.1 – 4.3)

Percents & Proportions (Sections 5.1 – 5.4)

Converting Units of Measure (Sect. 6.4)

Square roots (Section 7.5)

Signed Numbers (Sections 9.1 – 9.4)

Solving Equations (Sections 10.1 – 10.5)

As a courtesy to everyone in class, please turn off all cell phones.

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions & Records.

For Math 187B:

Friday, November 2, 2007 is the last day for a refund.

Friday, November 9, 2007 is the last day to drop with no record or declare C/NC.

Monday, November 19, 2007 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1.  Come to every class meeting.

2.  Arrive early, be prepared, and take notes.

3.  Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept.

4.  Do more than just the homework problems.

5.  Take advantage of the free tutoring service in the GMC and my hours as your academic coach.

6.  Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.

7.  Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance.

8.  Do some math every day.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students. Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

Calculators are not allowed for this class!

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Methods of Evaluation:

Homework is due the class meeting after the lecture. The assignment must be completed and turned in by 6pm in the GMC. Please be neat and show your work for each homework problem to receive credit. Each section that is incomplete receives partial credit. Homework that is turned in late but within one week of the due date will receive half credit. Homework turned in after this receives no credit. (9 homework assignments @11 points each + 1 = 100 points)

Two Quizzes are given in this course. They are given at the beginning of class before the lecture. Please be on time. All students are to take the quiz on the same day. If you miss a quiz, there is a penalty of one letter grade. No quiz can be made up after 3 school days. (100 points ea)

The Final Exam is given on the last day of class. All students must take the exam by May 10. If a student does not receive a passing grade in Math 187A, that student will not be allowed to continue on to Math 187B. (200 points)

Grades are based on the following scale.

A                                             90% - 100%               (450-500 points)

B                                             80% - 89%                 (400-449 points)

C                                             70% - 79%                 (350-399 points)

D                                             60% - 69%                 (300-349 points)

F                                              Below 60%                 (less than 300 points)

Student Outcomes

At the end of this class, a successful student will be able to:
1) Exhibit a proficiency in the topics covered in the course.
2) Engage in logical and critical thinking.
3) Read technical information.
4) Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into Mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements, and checking and verifying results.

Academic Honesty: Cheating or copying will not be tolerated. People who cheat dilute the honest effort of all the rest. If you cheat on a quiz or exam you will receive an F for the course, not merely for the test. Other college disciplinary action including expulsion might occur. If you are having difficulty with the course, please see me.

Homework problems that say Odd, means do all the Odd problems.

EOO means do Every Other Odd problem.

“Multiples of” is denoted by X followed by a number. (10-85 X 5, means do 10, 15, 20, 25,…,85)
