BASIC ALGEBRA (Part II)

Math 152 B

4 units

Winter, 1999

Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 to 10:20

INSTRUCTOR: Anne Luerken --- 544-6516 DO NOT CALL AFTER 9 PM OR BEFORE 7AM

REQUIRED TEXT: Understanding Algebra for College Students by Hirsch & Goodman.

RECOMMENDED TEXT: Student Solution Manual and Study Guide to Accompany Understanding Algebra

for the College Student (Check it out in the library, as there have been some complaints about it - before you

buy it).

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITE :

A grade of C or better in Math 152A or the equivalent, or a satisfactory score on Mathematics Assessment

Test.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is a continuation of Math 152A. Topics which are covered include factoring, solving equations

with rational and radical expressions, systems of linear equations and solving quadratic equations. Don't

worry if this makes no sense now, it will after you have taken the course.

GRADING POLICY:

Exam #1: 60 points

Exam #2: 60 points

Exam #3 60 points

Quizzes (based on homework) 30 points EACH

Final (Covers entire course content) 100 points

Homework 30 points

There may be a surprise quiz or two. Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of the possible

points.

A 90-100%

B 80-89%

C 70-79%

D 60-69%

F less than 60%

HOMEWORK:

Homework is required. It is due on the day following the lecture. Sample questions from the homework

will be checked. The answers to the odd number questions are in the back of the book. Check your work. If

you did not get the same answer as in the book, rework your problem. If you cannot understand your error,

call me at home between 7 AM and 9 PM. Many problems can be solved quickly over the phone. It is better

to call then struggle on a problem and become frustrated.. Do not turn in homework with incorrect answers,

or work that does not support your answers. All questions for the quizzes come from the homework . If all

homework is turned in on time (3 assignments may be late), the lowest test score will be dropped and

replaced with the average of the other 2 test scores.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

For quizzes there is no make-up. For Chapter Tests and the Final, make-up is possible, but there is a 10%

penalty, except for a written medical excuse. Arrangements must be made ahead of time. Tests may NOT

be retaken.

TUTORING:

Individual tutoring is available. Tutoring hours are posted in your classroom. Please take advantage of the

free tutoring.
