Graphing Calculator: You will need a graphing calculator for this class. Texas Instruments 85 (TI-85) graphing calculators can be rented for $15 per quarter from the Learning Assistance Center (B107). The instructors at this college demonstrate on the TI-85. The graphing calculator is required to solve or to validate the homework problems; it will not be required for exams.
Course Description: Provides an in-depth coverage of functions, their range and domain, inverse functions, as well as polynomial and ration- al functions. Their algebraic and geometric properties will be analyzed. Emphasis will be placed on application problems and the use of calculators.
Prerequisites: There are two prerequisites: 1) A grade of "C" or better in Math 154 (Intermediate algebra), and 2) a grade of "c"or better in either Math 153 (Geometry) or in Math 102 (Mathematical ideas). The above prerequisites must have been taken within the last two years. If not, a satisfactory score on an assessment test is required.
Grading Policy: There will be 2 two-hour exams, 6 twenty minute quizzes (of which the highest scoring 5 will be counted) and the final exam to be held on 23 March. The exams are 200 points each, the quizzes will total to 100 points and the final exam will be 300 points. The total is 800 points.
Grading Policy (con): Your letter grade is guaranteed to be based on your percentage of the 800 possible points: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% (we won't talk about the rest)
Registration: 1. You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions. 2. The last day to drop the class with no record is Friday, 16 Jan. 3. The last day to drop for a "W" grade is Friday, 6 March. 4. After 6 March you will receive an A, B, C, D, F or, in very special circumstances, an I for incomplete. 5. This instructor will not drop you from the class. You must assume this responsibility.
Make-up Policy There will be no make ups for quizzes since the instructor is using the best 5 of 6. For Chapter Tests and the Final, make up is possible BUT THERE WILL BE A 10% GRADING PENALTY, except, of course for a written medical excuse from 17 doctors, 3 nurses and your mother.
Tutoring: Individual tutoring is available in the Tutoring Lab (Room E103). Tutoring hours are posted on the bulletin board next to the office of Jane Baldo (A204). When available they will be announced in class.
Office Hours: Your instructor has no office. He will be available before or after class or at a time convenient to both the students and instructors availability. This will be discussed in class.
Learning Disabled Students: It is important that your needs be communicated to the instructor in order that accommodations can be made.
