Required Text:  Basic College Mathematics by Tobey & Slater, Fourth Edition.

Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems.  This class is a six-week course covering:

Math 187B

Decimals (Remaining part of Chapter 3)

Percent & Proportion (Chapter 5)

Converting Units of Measure (Section 6.4)

Square Root (Section 7.5)

Signed Numbers (Section 9.1 – 9.4)

Introduction to Algebra (Sections 10.1 – 10.5)

As a courtesy to everyone in class, please turn off all cell phones.

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions & Records.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1.  Come to every class meeting.

3.  Read each section before it is discussed in class.

4.  Do all the homework

5.  Do some math every day.

6.  Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance.

7.  Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept.

8.  Take advantage of tutors and office hours.

9.      Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

Calculators are not allowed for this class.

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Methods of Evaluation:

Homework Assignments #1 - #4 are due every MONDAY.  Homework #5 & #6 are due on Wednesday.  It must be completed and turned in at the beginning of class. Please be neat and show your work for each homework problem.  Each section that is incomplete receives partial credit.  Homework that is turned in late but within one week of the due date will receive half credit.  Homework turned in after this receives no credit.   Homework is 10% of the class grade.

2 Quizzes are given for this course.  They are given at the beginning of class before the lecture.  Please be on time. All students are to take the quiz on the same day.  If you miss a quiz, there is a penalty of one letter grade.  No quiz can be made up after 3 days.

Each quiz counts for 20% of the class grade for that course.

The Final Exam is given at the end of each course.  All students must take the exam by the last day of class.  If a student does not receive a passing grade in a course, that student will not be allowed to continue on to the next course.  The final exam counts for 50% of the class grade for that course.

Grades are based on the following scale.

                        A                                 90% - 100%

                        B                                 80% - 89%

                        C                                 70% - 79%

                        D                                 60% - 69%

                        F                                  Below 60%

Student Outcomes

At the end of this class, a successful student will be able to:
1) Exhibit a proficiency in the topics covered in the course.
2) Engage in logical and critical thinking.
3) Read technical information.
4) Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into Mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements, and checking and verifying results.

Homework assignments #1 - 4 are due on MONDAYS.

Problems that say Odd, means do all the Odd problems.

EOO means do Every Other Odd problem.
