MAT 187A and Mat187B – Basic Arithmetic (Parts I and II)

Advisory:            Appropriate skills demonstrated through the math assessment process. Students must pass Mat187A with a C or better to continue to Mat187B.

 

Course Description:            This course is divided into two parts. Part I covers general areas of arithmetic which include whole numbers, fractions, and an introduction to decimals. Part II covers general areas of arithmetic which include decimals, percents, and an introduction to algebra.

 

Student Outcomes

4) Demonstrating the solution to problems by translating written language into Mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements, and checking and verifying results.

Course Text:            Basic College Mathematics by Tobey & Slater, Fourth Edition.

 

Grading Scale:

A         90-100%

B         80-89%

C         70-79%

D         60-69%

F          59% and below

 

Tests:              40%

Quizzes:            25%

Homework:            10%

Final:               25%

 

Tests:              There will be at least 2 tests in each class, usually occurring on Wednesdays.

 

Quizzes:            There will be at least 2 quizzes in each class, usually occurring on Wednesdays. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

 

Homework:            Homework will be collected on the day of the quiz or test. The last day to turn in homework for Mat 187A is Monday, February 9.  The last day to turn in homework for Mat 187B is Monday, March 22. No homework will be accepted on the day of the final. Completing homework before quizzes and tests will provide practice and may make tests and quizzes seem easier than if the homework was not completed before the quizzes or tests.

 

Final:   There will be a comprehensive final exam for Mat 187A given on Wednesday, February 11 at 6 pm. There will be a comprehensive final exam for Mat 187B given on Wednesday, March 24 at 6 pm.

 

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

 

Calculators are not allowed for this class.

 

Attendance:            Regular attendance in class is an obligation assumed by every student at the time of his/her registration. Students will still be responsible for the work missed because of their absence. Homework questions will be answered in class. This can be very helpful in understanding the material, as well as preparing for quizzes and tests. Please familiarize yourself with the sections to be covered in class before attending class.

 

Missed Tests/Quizzes:           If a student is going to miss a quiz or test, the student is responsible for contacting the instructor before the quiz or test to make arrangements to take it another time.

 

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certifiable disability should contact the instructor so arrangements can be made.

 

How to Succeed in a Math Class:

  1. Come to every class meeting.
  2. Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts. Sit where you won’t be distracted.
  3. Read each section before it is discussed in class.
  4. Do all of the homework.
  5. Do some math every day.
  6. Start preparing for tests at least a week in advance.
  7. Take advantage of tutors and office hours, extra help can make a big difference.
  8. Do some review every time you study math.
