Graphing
Calculator: You will need a
graphing calculator for this class. The
Texas
Instruments
TI 89 graphing calculator is recommended. This Graphing calculator may be rented for a minimal fee from
the
Learning Assistance Center (B107).
The graphing calculator
is required to solve or to validate the
homework problems; it will not be required for exams. Course
Description: Provides an
in-depth coverage of functions, their range and
domain, inverse functions, as well as polynomial
and ration-
al functions. Their
algebraic and geometric properties will
be analyzed.
Emphasis will be placed on application
problems and the use of calculators. Prerequisites:
There are two prerequisites:
1) A grade of C or higher in both Math 153 (Geometry)
and Math 154 (Intermediate Algebra) or a satisfactory
score on the assessment test. Grading
Policy:
There will be 3 two-hour exams and 7 twenty minute quizzes which, in
accumulated totality, will comprise the 4th test.
The final exam will be held on 25 March in E106 @ 6:00 pm.
The 3 exams, the total count of the quizzes, and the final exam are each
worth 200 points. However, one exam
or the accumulated total of the quizzes may be discounted. Thus, the final grade will be based on 800
points.
Your letter grade is guaaraanteed to be based on your Percentage of the 800 possible
points: A: 720 800; B: 640 719; C:
560 639; D: 480 559; (we wont talk about the rest). Registration:
1. You
must register for this class at the Office of Admissions.
2. The last day to drop for
a refund is Friday, January 15 3.
The last day to drop the class with no record is Friday, January 31 4.
The last day to drop for a W grade is Friday, 7 March. 5 After
5 March you will receive an A, B, C, D, F or, in very
special circumstances, an I for incomplete. 6.
This instructor will drop you from the class only when
requested by the student or other special circumstances.
The student must assume this responsibility. Make-up
Policy There will be no make ups for quizzes since the
instructor is using
the
best 6 or 7 of . For Chapter Tests and the Final, make up is possible
BUT THERE WILL BE A 10% GRADING
PENALTY, except,
of course for a written medical excuse from 17 doctors, 3 nurses and
your mother. Tutoring:
Individual tutoring is available in the Tutoring Lab (Room E103).
Tutoring hours are posted on the bulletin board next to the office
of Jane Ellis (A204). When
available they will be announced in
class. Office
Hours: Your instructor has no office.
He will be available before and/or after
class, or at a time convenient to both the students and instructors
availability. This will be
discussed in class. Learning
Disabled Students: It is important
that your needs be communicated to
the instructor in order that accommodations can be made. TEST AND QUIZ PROBLEMS
The following page presents the lecture schedule for math 103A2 as well
as the listing of all the course algebra problems to be solved during the
quarter of which 90% will be used in the quizzes, exams, and the final test.
There is no homework to be handed
in.
The list of problems shown is over and above the odd
numbered problems whose solutions/answers are in the back of the text.
ALL of the odd numbered
problems are implicitly included in the listing below.
If the student has difficulty finding the correct solution to a problem
the student may either bring up the problem in class, find a tutor to assist,
refer to the Student Solution Manual, or submit the problem to the instructor
for assistance. TEST/QUIZ
