Math 152 B 1 Winter, 2000

Tuesday and Thursday 1030 AM to 1220 PM

Room D 108 4.0 units

Required Text: Algebra for College Students, by Daniel L. Auvil

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Math 152 B furnishes the student with all the algebraic tools necessary to solve the problems given in math 154, 103A and B. Without a firm grasp of these tools the student will have great difficulties in the algebra courses which follow.

Topics covered will stress factoring, solving equations with rational and radical expressions, systems of linear equations and solving quadratic equations.

IMPORTANT DATES:

o Jan 14 Last day to drop class for refunds, last day to turn in text book

for refunds.

o Jan 28 Last day to drop class with no record.

Note: The instructor will not drop a student from class. Do not

assume that because you don’t show up that you are dropped.

o Mar 3 Last day to drop with a W (withdrawal) on your record.

After 3 Mar the student will get a grade A - F.

TESTS, HOMEWORK AND GRADES:

These three topics are intimately related.

Tests. There will be three two hour tests and a final exam, each worth 200 points, yielding a total of 800 points. The tests will be primarily made up from the homework problems that the student has already completed (presumeably). Calculators will not be required when taking tests.

Those who achieve 90% or greater at the end of the quarter are guaranteed an A; 80% to 90% will get a B and so on. Below 60% will fail. It is possible to give an entire class all A’s (the converse is possible too ---all F’s). Make-up tests are possible but they will probably not be taken from homework assignments.

Homework. This class has an inordinate number of topics to cover. This means that the instructor must frequently cover more than one section during any one class period. This leads to an excess of homework problems just to keep up. The homework assignments affect the grading as follows. For those who turn in all the homework successfully their final grade will be elevated up one half a grade point, e.g., those that finish the course with a high C will get a B on their final grade, a high B will be pushed to an A, etc.

A successful homework assignment means finishing all the assigned odd numbered problems as well as the assigned even numbered problems. There is no credit given if the student just finishes the odd numbered problems. This rule is because the instructor needs to know how each individual in the class is doing. Do they completely understand the topics covered, or should the instructor review that topic before going on.

FOR THE IMPAIRED: For those with problem areas (vision, hearing, testing, etc.) please inform the instructor so that special arrangements can be made.
