REQUIRED TEXT: Understanding Algebra for College Students by Hirsch & Goodman
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will study the basic concepts of algebra. Topics include the real numbers and their properties, solving linear equations and inequalities, the four basic operations with polynomials, graphing linear functions and inequalities into variables, properties of exponents and an introduction to functions.
RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITE: Math 181 or equivalent, or satisfactory score on Mathematics Assessment Test.

Exam #1: Sections 1.1-1.6 60 points Exam #2: Sections 2.1 - 2.5 60 points Exam #3: Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 60 points Quizzes (based on homework) 60 points Final (Covers entire course content) 60 points Homework 60 points Attendance 40 points 400 points
Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of the possible points. The total possible is 400 points. A 90-100% 360-400 points B 80-89% 320-359 points C 70-79% 280-319 points D 60-69% 240-279 points F less than 60% 239 or less points
MAKE-UP POLICY: For quizzes there are no make-ups, however, one quiz is dropped, taking the best 3 out of 4. For chapter tests, only one make-up is possible, but there is 10% penalty, except for a written medical emergency. Students must contact the instructor in advance of the examination in order to arrange a make-up.
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classroom sessions. Your attendance and participation is part of the overall grade. Two absences will be excused.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be handed in with each examination. No late homework will be accepted beyond one classroom session.
REGISTRATION: 1. You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions and Records. 2. The last day to drop the class with no record is Friday, April 17. 3. The last day to drop the class for a "W" grade is Friday, June 5. 4. After June 5, if you are enrolled, you will receive one of the following grades: A B C D F or I (Incomplete, is only allowed in special cases).
In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid a grade. You must go to the registrar by the above dates to avoid a grade from option three or four.
