Basic Mathematics

Text:                                       Basic College Mathematics, John Tobey and Jeffrey Slater, 5th Edition

 

Calculator:                              No calculators are allowed in MAT 187B

 

Course Description:               This course covers general areas of arithmetic which include decimals, percents, and an introduction to algebra.

 

Prerequisite:                           MAT 187A with a grade of “C” or better or equivalent or appropriate skills demonstrated through the math assessment process.

 

Course Objectives:                The successful student will:

1.       exhibit a proficiency in the topics covered in the course.

2.       engage in logical and critical thinking.

3.       read technical information.

4.       demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate mathematical statements, and checking and verifying results.

 

Grades:                                   The following items make up the total points possible for the course:

                                                            Homework        50 points          

                                                            Exam #1           75 points

                                                            Exam #2           75 points

                                                            Final Exam        100 points

 

Final grades will be based on your percentage of the 300 possible points:

                                                            A         90%-100%

                                                            B          80%-89%

                                                            C          70%-79%

                                                            D         60%-69%

                                                            F          below 60%

 

Homework Policy:                  Homework is due the class period after it is assigned.  Homework not turned in at this time will be considered late and will be accepted no more than two class meetings after it is due for half credit.

 

Make-up Policy:                     For Exams and the Final, make-up is possible, but there is a 10% penalty if the absence is not excused.

 

Learning Disabilities:             If you have an identified learning disability, speak to me the first day of class about any special needs you may have.  Learning disabilities will be accommodated.

Tips for Your Success:           Show up to every class meeting on time and be prepared to participate.

                                                Use your textbook.  It is a great resource.

                                                Do all your homework and show your work.

                                                Study for each test at least a week in advance.

Stay organized so you can find what you need easily.

Take care of yourself.  Do your best to eat well and get enough rest.

                                                Ask questions, make use of my office hours, and utilize the GMC.
