EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY Syllabus Math 153-1 (4 units) Spring 2005 Mon.-Wed. 9:00-10:50AM Judy Guinn M-W Lecture: A211 Home Phone: (775) 588-6413 Monday Lab: 10:00-10:50AM, D123 Voicemail: (530) 541-4660 ext.476 REQUIRED TEXT: Geometry, Prentice Hall Mathematics COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a formal course in Geometry covering the basics of lines, planes, angles, triangles and congruence, the Pythagorean Theorem, similarity, and special right triangles. The methods of deductive reasoning will be studied in depth. A portion of this class will be taught in the computer lab. STUDENT OUTCOMES: PREREQUISITE: C or better in Mat152A and Mat152B, or satisfactory score on assessment test. Mat152B may be taken concurrently. GRADING POLICY: Exam 1 (Chapters 1-3) 100 points Exam 2 (Chapters 4-6) 100 points Homework 180 points Lab 70 points Quizzes 75 points Final (Cumulative) 150 points Total = 675 points Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of the total points. The total points possible is 675 points. A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F less than 60% MAKE-UP POLICY: There are no make-ups for quizzes however one quiz score will be dropped, taking the best 3 out of 4 quizzes. Make-up for Exams and the Final will be assessed a 10% penalty if the absence is not excused. Students must contact the instructor in advance of the examination in order to arrange a make-up. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If there is anyone in this class who has need for test-taking or note-taking arrangements through the Disabilities Resource Center, please feel free to come and discuss this with me. Students receiving specialized instruction or tutoring through the Disabilities Resource Center (DRC) should let me know so that I can work with their instructors and tutors regarding this curriculum. LAB: Computer lab activities will be a component of this class. We will use the Computer Lab on Monday, beginning the second week of class. Lab work will be completed and handed in by the next class period after the assigned lab. Do not miss scheduled lab time or you will have to come in to open lab time on your own time, when the lab assistants will probably be unfamiliar with our software program. HOMEWORK and LAB REPORTS: Homework and lab reports will be due the next class period from when it was assigned. For example, homework assigned on Monday is due Wednesday and homework assigned Wednesday is due the following Monday. Lab reports are due on the Wednesday following the regularly scheduled Monday Lab time. Late homework and lab reports will be accepted one class period beyond the due date, with a 50% penalty, no exceptions. You must turn your papers into my mailbox through the student mail-drop box inside the Reprographics Room if you are unable to attend class to avoid a late penalty. I will check my mailbox at 12 Noon on the days of instruction. Homework not turned in to my box by 12 Noon will be considered late. OFFICE HOURS: A half-hour office hour will be arranged either before or after class as per student consensus and room availability. I will also be available by appointment as needed. TUTORING: Free tutoring is available in the Gateway Math Center, G-4. Schedules for tutoring will be handed out in class when made available to me.
