Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills of basic arithmetic and introduce them to algebra.  The goal of this class is to help students develop a strong foundation and understanding of mathematics so they are able to apply mathematical skills to “real life” problems.  This course will cover decimals, percents, and an introduction to algebra.  Calculators are NOT allowed in this class!

Prerequisite: grade of C or better in Math 187A or qualifying score on Math Assessment Test.

Grading:

Homework is 12% of your grade (50 points)

Each Exam is 25% of your grade (2 exams @ 100 points each)

Final Exam is 38% of your grade (150 points)

Your letter grade will be based on the percentage of the 400 points you earn:

90 – 100%   A

80 -  89%     B

70 – 79%     C

60 – 69%     D

below 60%     F

Note:  You must have at least 70% to pass if you are taking this class as credit/no credit.

How to Succeed in a Math Class:

        Attend every class meeting.

Arrive early – review previous notes & look ahead.

Use the Gateway Math Center (G4) located in the portable near dance room & photo lab

Read each section before it is discussed in class.

Do all of the homework – check answers & bring questions to class.

Note:  If you have a certifiable learning disability that may affect your performance you need to notify the instructor at the first class meeting.  Learning disabilities will be accommodated.

Student Outcomes -  The successful student will:
1. Exhibit a proficiency in the topics covered in the course
2. Engage in logical and critical thinking
3. Read technical information
4. Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into
mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant
diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math
statements, and checking and verifying results.

Special Notes:

Students requiring special services need to notify the instructor immediately.

Registration is the student’s responsibility.

Attendance is critical to success.

Calculators are not allowed for testing, so practice without them on the homework.

Tests will be administered on the test dates only, unless previously arranged.

All assignments and test dates are located on the back of this page – if it becomes necessary to make changes in assignments/dates the instructor will notify the students as soon as possible.

Notes:  EEO stands for Every Other Odd on problem assignments

All homework assignments are due at the next class meeting.  Late assignments will be accepted for ฝ credit if turned in within 1 week of the due date, after that no credit will be awarded.  No late work will be accepted after the final exam.
