Required Textbook:  Mathematics, A Practical Odyssey. 5th Edition. By Johnson/ Mowry

Optional Textbook: The Student Manual to Mathematics, A Practical Odyssey, 5th ed.

 By Johnson/Mowry

A copy of The Student Manual to Mathematics, A Practical Odyssey, 5th ed.  By Johnson/Mowry is in the Gateway Math Center, the Disability Resource Center, and in the Library on reserve.

Course Description:  This course provides a survey of a variety of branches of mathematics including inductive and deductive reasoning, business and finance math, finding perimeter and area, The Pythagorean theorem, an introduction to right triangle trigonometry, exponential growth and decay, logarithms, probability and statistics.  An emphasis will be placed on overcoming the fear of mathematics and seeing the use of mathematics in the "real world".

Prerequisite:  A grade "C" or better in Math 154, or equivalent, or appropriate skills demonstrated through the Math assessment process.

As a Courtesy to everyone in class, please turn off your cell phones.  Thank you.

Grading:  Your class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale:

A:  90% and above,     B: 80-89%,      C: 70-79%,             D: 60-69%,    F: 59% and under

                        Homework (Even Problems)        110 points

                        3 Quizzes                                                  90 points

3 Midterm Exams                         360 points

                        Comprehensive Final Exam:  200 points

                        Total                                                   760 points

I have given practice problems after every section.  I do not collect practice problems.

These exercises are for you to improve your understanding of the material and to prepare you for quizzes and exams.  Do these problems after each of their lectures.

Homework:  The Even-numbered problems are due every Wednesday, except HW 11*.  They are to be turned in by 5 PM on the day they are due.  The assignment is considered late if it is not turned in at this time. If you will be absent, either turn in the homework assignment early or have someone turn in the homework assignment for you.  Homework that is late, but turned in within one week of the due date receives half credit.  Homework turned in after this receives no credit.

Quizzes:  There are no make-up quizzes.  I give 4 quizzes, but only 3 are counted so you may drop your lowest quiz.

Midterm Exams:  You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT 368).  Exams must be made up within 3 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10% You may take an exam up to 3 school days before the scheduled date without penalty.  Arrangements must be made with me in advance.

**If you have turned in EVERY homework assignment with no more than two (2) late, you may drop your lowest MIDTERM exam score.

The Comprehensive Final Exam is on Monday, June 21, from 2 – 3:50 PM

Calculators:  You will need a scientific calculator for this course.  I will advise you which scientific calculator will be sufficient for this class.  A graphing calculator is not allowed for testing.

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Course materials available in alternate format.

Student Outcomes
The successful student will:
1. Demonstrate a reduction of their fear of Mathematics.
2. Exhibit an introductory proficiency in several branches of Mathematics.
3. Manifest their understanding of the application of Mathematics in the real world.
4. Engage in logical and critical thinking.
5. Show proficiency in reading technical information.
6. Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements and checking and verifying results.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions & Records.

Friday, April 16, 2004 is the last day for refunds.

Friday, April 30, 2004 is the last day to drop with no record.

Friday, June 4, 2004 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade.
