Required Text: Algebra for College Students by Daniel L. Auvil Optional Text: Student Manual for Algebra for College Students by Daniel L. Auvil Check out the Student Manual for Algebra for College Students at the library before buying it to see if it fulfills your needs. Course Description: This course is a continuation of Math 152B. I will be presenting quadratic equations and functions and their applications, non-linear inequalities, operations and composition of functions, conic sections: parabolas, circles, ellipses and hyperbolas, 3X3 linear systems of equations, non-linear systems, inverse functions, exponential functions, logarithms, sequences and series, and the Binomial Theorem. Prerequisite: Math 152B with a grade "C" or better or appropriate skills demonstrated through the Math Assessment process. Calculators: You will need a scientific calculator for this class. I will discuss in class which features are needed on the calculator. If you intend to take Math 103A and continue with higher level math you may need a graphing calculator. In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade. You must go to Admissions & Records. Friday, April 26, 2002 is the last day to drop with no record. Friday, May 31, 2002 is the last day to withdraw with a W grade. Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made. *
Course materials available in alternate format.
Grading: Your class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale: A: 90% and above, B: 80-89%, C: 70-79%, D: 60-69%, F: 59% and under Homework: 175 points (Practice Problems: 80 points) (Even Problems: 95 points) 3 Quizzes @ 25 pts each 75 points Midterm Exam 1: 100 points Midterm Exam 2: 100 points Midterm Exam 3: 100 points
Comprehensive Final Exam:
200 points Total 750 points Quizzes: There are no make-up quizzes. I give 4 quizzes but only 3 are counted so the lowest quiz score is dropped. Midterm Exams: You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT 368). Exams must be made up within 3 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10%, (except with written doctors excuse.) You may take an exam up to 3 school days before the scheduled date without penalty. Arrangements must be made with me one week in advance. If you have turned in EVERY homework assignment with no more than 2 late, you may drop one Midterm exam score. Math 191R1 is taken Credit/No Credit. In order to receive credit for this class, you may either keep a journal or write a report. There will be short, in-class writing assignments. Journal: The journal may include your thoughts in this class, what you learned that interested you, your progress, and revelations, etc. There must be at least 8 entries to be turned in for credit. Report: The report must be a biography about a mathematician and his or her contribution to the world. The report is to be typed, double-spaced, and 2 pages long. The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students. Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs. Tentative Class Schedule Math 154-1 Date
