Attendance:                Required.  Summer Session is fast, intense and short.  So we will move at a fast pace. Please keep in mind that Mathematics is not a spectator sport.  Just as you cannot be successful at playing a sport by watching, you cannot learn Mathematics by watching.  Doing is the name of the game.  So plan on being and doing.

Homework Policy:      Homework is due the following class after it is assigned.  Five problems will be randomly graded for a total credit of five points.  Any late homework will only be worth half credit and is only accepted two classes after it is assigned.  Note: homework is your main way of learning and applying what we learn in class.  Even if points aren’t available, doing the assignments will allow for a higher grade on your assessments.

Make-up Policy:        There are no make-up on quizzes. You must notify me a class before if you will miss an exam.  You must make it up within three classes after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10% per class.  You may take the exam before the scheduled date without a penalty.

Learning

Disabilities                 If you have a learning disability, be sure to discuss it with us.  Learning disabilities will be accommodated.

Tutoring:                     Individual Math tutoring is available in the Gateway Math Center (G-4).  Check at the GMC for specific hours.  It is free, so feel free to use it!  I will also be available upon appointment to offer extra support.

Math Success:           Success in Mathematics isn’t just because you are “good at it” or have a specific learning style.  Success in Mathematics comes from specific strategies:

·        Attending classes (both physically and mentally)

·        Having knowledge about what is being covered, like reading ahead and addressing specific vocabulary.  Mathematics is a language, not just vocabulary.

·        Doing some math everyday to keep if fresh in your mind and keep the psychological stress of procrastination down.

·        Study in groups.  We learn best what we have to explain to others.  This doesn’t mean do all homework with groups.  You still need personal time to learn.  Use the groups after homework for the summarizing and synthesizing of concepts.

·        Prepare!  When studying for exams, follow the strategies we discuss in class.

·        Take advantage of support.

Registration:

·        You must register for this course at the Office of Admissions and Records

·        You may drop the class with no penalty or mark on your record on or before July 6th, 2001.

·        After _____________, you may drop the class and receive a grade of W until ________

·        After ____________, if you are enrolled, you will receive one of the following grades: A,B,C,D,F or I (Incomplete will only be allowed is special cases).

·        It is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

Calculators:                Scientific Calculators are required, in particular for logarithms.  If a student is going to Math 103A, they may want to go ahead and get the Texas Instrument 85 (your instructor will use it for 103A) or comparable graphing calculator.  Note:  A graphing calculator is required for 103A and higher.  They will be a helpful tool for this class, but will not be required.
