Course description This course will study the basic concepts of algebra. Topics include the real numbers their properties, solving linear equations and inequalities, the four basic operations with polynomials, graphing linear functions and inequalities in two variables, properties of exponents and introduction to functions.Prerequisite A grade of C or better in Math 181 within the last two years or an equivalent class, or a satisfactory score on the Mathematics assessment. Grading Policy Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of possible points.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN A MATH CLASS 1 ) Come to every class meeting.2) Arrive early, get yourself settled, spend a few minutes looking at your notes from the previous class meeting, and have you materials ready when class starts.3) Read each section before it is discussed in class, try a few homework problems.4) Do some math every day.5) Start preparing for the tests at least a week in advance.6) Spend about half of your study time working with your classmates. 7) Take advantage of tutors and office hours, extra help can make a big difference.Exam Policy Students are to bring pencils or pens, and paper to each exam. Grading will based on the progress towards the final answer, and the demonstration of understanding of the concept that is being tested, therefore, work must be shown in detail. Any student who cannot make it to an exam may elect to take the exam up to two days before the exam is scheduled. If all homework is completed and no more than three homework assignments are counted late, then the midterm with the lowest score will be dropped.Make-Up Policy For quizzes there is no make-up. For Midterms and the Final, make-up is possible, but there is a 10% penalty, except with a written medical excuse. Arrangements must be made ahead of time. If you need an accommodation for the test, please let me know. I’ll take care of all the arrangements. Tests and quizzes may NOT be retaken. Homework Policy Homework is required. It is due on the day following the lecture. Sample questions from the homework will be checked. The answers to the odd number questions are in the back of the book. Check your work. If you did not get the same answer as in the book, rework your problem. If you cannot understand your error, see a tutor or call me at home between 9 AM and 8:30 PM. Many problems can be solved quickly over the phone. It is better to call, then struggle on a problem and become frustrated. Do not turn in homework with incorrect answers, or work that does not support your answers. All questions for the quizzes come from the homework . Learning Disabilities If you have a learning disability, be sure to discuss it with Karen. Learning disabilities will be accommodated. Tutoring Individual math tutoring is available in the Gateway Math Center (G-4). Tutors are available M-F 9-6, Sat 10-4 and Sun. 12-4. Additional hours may be available, check at the GMC. Registration 1. You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions and Records. 2. You may drop the class with no penalty or mark on your record on or before Friday, April 28. 3. After April 28, you may drop the class and receive a grade of W until Friday, June 2. 4. After June 2, if you are enrolled, you will receive one of the following grades: A,B,C,D,F or I (Incomplete, must be negotiated with the instructor and is only allowed in special cases). In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade. You must go to the registrar by the above dates to avoid the unwanted grade. (I WILL NOT drop you.) HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS Lecture will always be geared towards an explanation of the topics that will be covered on the upcoming homework assignment and/or exam
