Required Text: Basic College Mathematics by Tobey & Slater – Fourth Edition
Course Description: MAT 187A: This course covers general areas of arithmetic which include whole numbers, fractions and an introduction to decimals. MAT 187B: This course covers general areas of arithmetic which include decimals, percents, and an introduction to algebra.
Student Outcomes: 1) Exhibiting a proficiency in the topics covered in the course. 2) Engaging in logical and critical thinking. 3) Reading technical information. 4) Demonstrating the solution to problems by translating written language into Mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math statements, and checking and verifying results.
Tutoring: Tutoring is available in the Gateway Math Center (GMC) in room G4 in the portable buildings near the dance room and photo lab.
Grading Policy: Homework 100 (187A/B 20 points each) Exam 1 100 Exam 2 100 Final Exam 150
Letter grade is based on the following range: A 90 – 100 % B 80 – 89 % C 70 – 79 % D 60 – 69 % F less than 60 %
Make-Up Policy: For the exams and final, they can be made up with a 10% penalty if the absence is not excused. Homework is deducted 2 points for each day it is late.
Calculators: There will be no calculators used in this class.
Learning Disabilities: If you have a certifiable learning disability that may affect your performance in the class, be sure to discuss your special needs with your instructor during the first week of class. Learning disabilities will be accommodated.
Registration: - You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions and Records. - The last day to drop with class with no record is Friday, Oct 15. - The last day to drop with class for a ‘W’ grade is Friday, Nov 19. - After Nov 19, if you are enrolled you will receive some kind of grade.
How to be Successful in a Math Class: 1) Come to class on time each day and participate. 2) Ask questions when you are unsure. 3) Read the sections that will be discussed prior to the class period. 4) Do your homework – all of your homework. 5) Create study groups or go to the GMC for assistance. 6) Contact the instructor for assistance if you need anything. 7) Have fun.
