Thank you. Course Description: This course is an introduction to algebra. I will be presenting the Real Numbers and their properties and operations, absolute value equations, simplifying algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, applications with formulas, the rectangular coordinate system, graphing linear equations and inequalities, polynomials and their operations, integral exponents, scientific notation, and an introduction to functions. This course will connect math with the real world. It is my desire to reduce math anxiety and build self-confidence in every student by the end of this class. Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Math 187B, or equivalent or appropriate skills demonstrated through the Math Assessment process. Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class. Accommodations
for Students with Disabilities:
Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect
class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to
discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate
arrangements can be made. Course
materials available in alternate format.
How
to succeed in a Math class: 1. Come to every class meeting. 2. Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts. Sit where you wont be distracted and take notes. 3. Do all the homework 4. Do some math every day. 5. Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance. 6. Ask questions, especially if you dont understand a concept. 7. Take advantage of tutors and my office hours. 8. Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate. The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students. Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs. In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade. You must go to the registrars office. Friday, October 1, 2004 is the last day for refunds. Friday, October 15, 2004 is the last day to drop with no record. Friday, November 19, 2004 is the last day to withdraw with a W grade. Math 183 must be taken Credit */ No
Credit *In order to receive Credit for this one unit course you have two options: 1. A paper may be written on your experiences and
thoughts about math. The written
assignment must be typed, double-spaced and at least two pages long, but no more
than three pages. 2. You may keep a journal about this Math 152A class. The journal must have at least seven (7) entries and be a paragraph for each entry. All papers or journals are due by Wednesday, November 24, 2004.
Grading:
Your class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale: A: 90% and above, B: 80 - 89%, C: 70 - 79%, D: 60 - 69%, F: 59% and under

Comprehensive Final Exam:
200 points Total 760 points I have given practice problems for each section. These exercises are for you to improve your understanding of the material and to prepare you for quizzes and exams. Do these problems after each of their lectures. I DO NOT collect practice problems. Homework: The Even problems to be turned in are in bold and are due weekly in class. Their sections and due dates are on the lecture schedule of the syllabus. These problems are considered late if they are not turned in by 1 PM the day they are due in the box outside my office. If you will be absent, either turn in the homework early or have someone turn in the homework for you. Homework that is turned in late within one week of the due date receives half credit. Homework turned in after this receives no credit. Quizzes: There are no make-up quizzes. I give 4 quizzes but only 3 are counted so the lowest score will be dropped. Quizzes are given at the beginning of class. Please be on time because I lecture after the quizzes. Midterm Exams: You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT 368). Exams must be made up within 3 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10% (except with written medical excuse). You may take an exam up to 3 school days before the scheduled date without penalty. Arrangements must be made with me one week in advance. Calculators are not allowed during testing. Please practice the homework without them. Odd
means do the Odd problems. EOO
means do Every Other Odd problem. Tentative Lecture
