Course Description: The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems. This is a short course covering the last two modules of the Math 181 A-E sequence. Each class is one unit and covers a different topic: Module 181 D Percentages, Ratios and Proportions (Sections 4.2, 4.3, 8.1 & Chapter 5) Module 181 E Introduction to Algebra (Sections 9.1 9.4 & 10.1 10.5) This class is a
positive attendance class. I will
take attendance every day. Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made. *
Course materials available in alternate format.
How to
succeed in a Math class: 1. Come to every class meeting. 2. Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts. Sit where you wont be distracted and take notes. 3. Read each section before it is discussed in class. 4. Do all the homework 5. Do some math every day. 6. Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance. 7. Ask questions, especially if you dont understand a concept. 8. Take advantage of tutors and office hours. 9. Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate. The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students. Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs. Method of
Evaluation: Homework must be completed and turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. Please be neat and show your work for each homework problem. Each section that is incomplete or turned in late will receive half credit. Homework is 5% of the class grade. Quizzes are given at the half way point of each module. The quiz counts for 25% of the class grade for the module. All students are to take the quiz on the same day. If you miss a quiz, there is a penalty for make-up quizzes. Exams are given at the end of each module. All students must take the exam by the last day of class. If a student does not receive a passing grade in a module, that student will not be allowed to continue on to the next module. The exam counts for 70% of the class grade for that module. Each Module receives a separate grade. Grades are based on the following scale.
A
90% - 100%
B
80% - 89%
C
70% - 79%
D
60% - 69% Homework
