Textbook: Mathematics, A Practical
Odyssey. 4th Ed. By Johnson/ Mowry A
copy of The Student Manual to Mathematics, A Practical Odyssey, 4th
ed. By Johnson/Mowry is in the
Gateway Math Center, the DRC, and in the Library. Course
Description: This course provides a
survey of a variety of branches of mathematics including inductive and deductive
reasoning, business and finance math, finding perimeter and area, The
Pythagorean theorem, an introduction to right triangle trigonometry, exponential
growth and decay, logarithms, probability and statistics.
An emphasis will be placed on overcoming the fear of mathematics and
seeing the use of mathematics in the "real world". Prerequisite:
A grade "C" or better in Math 154, or appropriate skills
demonstrated through the Math assessment process. Calculators:
You will need a calculator for this course.
On the first day of class, I will advise you which calculator will be
sufficient for this class. In
this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an
unwanted grade. You
must go to Admissions & Records. Oct. 4, 2002 is the last day for refunds. Oct. 18, 2002 is the last day to drop
with no record. Nov. 22, 2002 is the last day to withdraw
with a W grade. Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
* Course materials available in alternate format. Grading: Your
class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale: A:
90% and above, B:
80-89%, C:
70-79%,
D: 60-69%, F: 59%

I have given practice problems for each section. These exercises are for you to improve your understanding of
the material and to prepare you for quizzes and exams. Do these problems after each of their lectures.
**They are to be turned in on the
day of the Exam covering those sections.
The Even-numbered problems and
their due dates are on the last page of the syllabus. These assignments are to be turned in by 12:00 PM on the day they are due. The assignment is considered late if it is not turned in at
this time. If you will be absent, either turn in the homework assignment early
or have someone turn in the homework assignment for you. Homework that is late, but turned in within one week of the
due date receives half credit.
Homework turned in after one week of the due date receives no
credit. Quizzes:
There are no make-up quizzes.
I give 4 quizzes and only 3 are counted so you may drop your lowest quiz. Midterm
Exams:
You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT
368). Exams must be made up
within 2 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10%
(except with written doctors excuse. Finals
not included.) You may take an exam
up to 2 school days before the scheduled date without penalty.
Arrangements must be made with me
in advance. Comprehensive
Final Exam: The comprehensive final exam is divided into two parts: 1) The take-home portion is worth 30 points. It will be handed out one
week before the in-class final exam and is due the day of the final.
2) The in-class portion of the comprehensive final exam is worth 150
points.
