Course Description: This course provides a survey of a variety of branches of mathematics including inductive and deductive reasoning, business and finance math, an introduction to trigonometric functions, exponential growth and decay, probability and statistics. An emphasis will be placed on overcoming the fear of mathematics and seeing the use of mathematics in the "real world".

Prerequisite: A grade "C" or better in Math 154 within the last 2 years, or a satisfactory score on the Math assessment test.

 

 

It is important that students who are identified as being learning disabled speak to me about their special needs within the first week of class.

 

 

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to the registrar’s office.

October 12, 2001 is the last day to drop with no record.

November 16, 2001 is the last day to withdraw with a "W" grade.

 

Calculators: You will need a calculator for this course. On the first day of class, I will advise you which calculator will be sufficient for this class.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1. Come to every class meeting.

  1. Read each section before it is discussed in class.
  2. Do some math every day.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Study in groups with other students.
  5. Prepare at least one week before exams.
  6. Take advantage of tutors and office hours.

 

Grading: Your class letter grade will be based on the usual grading scale:

A: 90% and above, B: 80-89%, C: 70-79%, D: 60-69%, F: 59% and under

Homework: 175 points

3 Quizzes (25 pts each) 75 points

Midterm Exam 1: 100 points

Midterm Exam 2: 100 points

Midterm Exam 3: 100 points

Comprehensive Final Exam: 200 points

Homework: Homework is due the class period after the lecture on that section. Homework is considered late if it is not turned in at this time. You may turn in homework up to one week after it is due for half credit. Each homework section is worth 8 points. There are 25 homework assignments. I have incorporated 25 extra points to the homework if you do them all correctly.

Quizzes: There are no make-up quizzes. One quiz is worth 3 % of the total grade.

Midterm Exams: You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT 368). Exams must be made up within 3 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10%. You may take an exam up to 2 school days before the scheduled date without penalty. Arrangements must be made with me in advance. If you have turned in EVERY homework assignment with no more than 3 late, you may drop one Midterm exam score.

Comprehensive Final Exam: The comprehensive final exam is divided into two parts: a take-home portion worth 50 points. It will be handed out one week before the in-class final exam and is due the day of the final. The in-class portion of the comprehensive final exam is worth 150 points.
