  1. Preterite Tense

As you probably remember from when you last studied the preterite tense, it has many irregular verbs.  They just have to be memorized.  However, once you start speaking Spanish all the time in Salamanca, the preterite tense should come easily to you.

Start by reviewing the regular verbs in the preterite tense, then go on to the irregular verbs.  Use the handout from your course packet that has the reference sheet with irregular preterite forms.

bulletIn your text:
bulletregular preterite, p 239
bulletirregulars, pp 259, 260, 263
bulletdar, hacer, ir, ser, p 240

The preterite tense in one of two past tense verb forms in Spanish.  The other is the imperfect.  Use the preterite to express actions that are considered "over and done with."

Examples:

Comí muchas tapas anoche. - I ate many tapas last night.
Fui a la plaza. - I went to the plaza.
Estuve aquí - I was here.
No hice nada ayer. - I didn't do anything yesterday.
