I used my time during grad school to explore my ancestral histories, especially of my Hawaiian side, and use their traditional visual vocabularies to express present day problems of those cultures.  My ideas developed so that I felt incapable of expressing or composing an object that would capture the essence of its disparate parts.  Further abstracting and layering of images had become a way of attaining a sense of loss, discovery, displacement, and transmogrification while images from my Hawaiian ancestry and nautical tools still play an important role.
