Lori Hanson: VIEWS
Landscape Paintings & Drawings
Opening Thursday, April
16th, 2009, from 6 – 8pm in Lake Tahoe Community College’s Haldan Art
Gallery is a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings titled, “VIEWS”.
This exhibition features the work of Bay Area artist, Lori Hanson.
A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Lori Hanson has been
exhibiting her work in the northern California region for many years.
Throughout her career her work has shown a concern for narrative imagery
both figural and landscape. This body of work focuses exclusively on the
landscape of the California foothills – the place she now calls home.
Painting “en plein air”, Hanson’s paintings are often bathed in the
golden light of late afternoon. The characters that animate these views
are the oak trees that inhabit the California foothills. And each of her
oak trees resonates with individual character. The artist breathes life
into these organic forms with an intricate style of brushwork that seems
to almost dance the jig across the wood panel surface. Rich in detail
and coloration, Hanson’s oil paintings are reminiscent in surface
treatment and tonality of 15th century northern European paintings. They
share the same jewel-like surface and intricate brushwork of a Jan Van
Eyck altarpiece.
The subject matter, however, is all California. Her plein air landscapes
pay homage to a host of early 20th century artists who painted those
golden hills before her. But there is something entirely contemporary in
the way Hanson puts it together. Coming from an education that stressed
the physical surface of the canvas over illusionary form, Hanson comes
to the realm of landscape painting through the back door. This gives her
work a unique quality in that they show an understanding of abstraction
and the importance that surface plays in the development of form.
Equally intricate and visually rewarding are the charcoal and pencil
drawings. Hanson shows her deftness as a draftsman in these stunning
portraits of trees. The drawings reveal the level of concentrated study
that the artist brings her subject.
An “Artist’s Talk” will be held in the Haldan Art Gallery at 5pm on
Thursday, April 16th, prior to the artist’s reception. The public is
welcome. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, June 20th.
