A brief introduction...

About American Sign Language Lake Tahoe (ASLLT)

In Deaf Culture it's considered necessary to share information about yourself and provide an introduction. My name is K. Johnston. I've been instructing ASL at the college level since 1995. I began my studies in Audiology. However, after my first year of study it was discovered that I had hearing loss in both my ears, significant enough that I was declined from the Audiology program. I switched my major to Social Work and began an Interpreting Training Program at the same time. I graduated from both programs and passed my State Interpreting Examination.  Soon after beginning my career as a Sign Language Interpreter and counselor for the Deaf, I discovered my interest for American Sign Language.

As coincidence would have it, I was offered a position to teach ASL at my local community college. I accepted the job, but with apprehension--I had a strong desire to represent Deaf culture; how was I to do this? I was fortunate enough to meet a wonderful Deaf woman who has been my role model and team teacher since 1995.

Over the years I have noticed the needs in my small community. Through my teaching experience, social work background, and interaction with the Deaf community, I have compiled the ideas for this website. I am not an expert in the field, but rather a student myself of this precious language and culture.

I wish to thank my sweetheart for his undying patience with me in this endeavor. It was his ideas and designing of the website that made the whole thing possible. Everything beautiful on this site, as well as the mail monkey (!!) are his creations.

I wish to also remember my Grandpa Israel who was deaf and struggled with his oral path. He has made an impression in my heart and mind forever. It's him I thank for bringing me to my current profession of teaching ASL which is my passion. I have great appreciation for my Deaf community here in Lake Tahoe. I feel very fortunate for the time spent with everyone within this group.

Lastly, I wish to thank my students. At times, they are my teachers. My lessons have been many.

You may have noticed the logo for the site, which my sweetheart designed. It is the "I Love You" sign widely used in Deaf culture to show your affection towards someone. This sign seemed appropriate as a display of my appreciation to all those who have influenced me along my path.

Thank you for taking the time to view this site. It was designed specifically to serve you. Therefore, please don't hesitate to critique, give feed back, or offer suggestions. I wish this site to be the most accurate of representations. I hope you enjoy!
